Dental Insurance for Baby
Should I add my baby to my dental insurance?
I recently had a baby girl. I added her to my health insurance policy that I receive through work. I’d like to know when I need to add her to my dental insurance. Open enrollment comes up again in a few months. Should I add my baby to the dental during open registration, or should I add her mid-term? If I wait, she will be around eight months, which is when her teeth will start to come in. Does a baby need to see a dentist sooner?
Reply: The general rule of thumb is that a child should see a dentist by their first birthday or when they cut their first tooth. So waiting until open enrollment to add your daughter to your dental plan may work out for you. I suggest calling the dental insurance company and asking them if you can add your daughter now and how much that may cost you. Generally speaking, your cost for dental insurance may be more to add her whether you do it now or later. You may want to find out how it would affect you by adding her now or waiting. This information will help you choose what suits you and your family.
