puffy red gums, is this part of teething

My daughter just started teething and she just cut her first tooth.  Now however her gums look read and puffy to me.  She is my first child so I am not sure if that is normal since she is teething or if she has something wrong with  her gums.   Should I be putting something on them to bring down the puffiness?
