Maryland dental care for braces, My sons braces are hurting him

My son is new to having to have braces on.  I expected them to hurt him a little but he saying that his teeth and jaw really are sore and is in pain.  He can only seem to eat soft foods right now and I feel really bad for him.  He had them on now for three days about how much longer will it take for him to adjust to his braces?
