Baby Dental Care, What are Space Maintainers and Why are They Used.

Thursday, Aug. 9th 2012 8:40 AM

Space maintainers are dental appliances that can be made of either metal or plastic.  If your child needs to have  Space maintainers they are custom made in order to fit your child mouth.

Space maintainers are use to hold open the empty space left by a lost baby tooth. They help to steady the remaining teeth to prevent movement until the permanent tooth takes it place in the jaw.  This options is much more affordable (normally covered under most dental insurance plans) and easier on your child to keep the teeth in normal positions with a space maintainer than to move them back in place with orthodontic treatment.
