Baby Dental, Cosmetic Dentistry for Children

Wednesday, Jul. 1st 2015 6:33 AM

Question: I have a five year old that lived with is mom up until a few weeks ago.  Now my son is with me.  I took him to my dentist and was told he has five cavities and may need to have two root canals done. I found out that my son has  baby bottle tooth decay or carries.

My dentist really does not handle small children he saw him since I have been going to him for over 15 years.   He advises me to see a specialist.  That my son will probably have issue with his baby teeth now for a while.  That I should have all the teeth fixed.  I am looking into my insurance to find out what is and what is not covered but do I have to go to a cosmetic dentist to fix that many teeth?  What kind of specialist is he talking about.

The truth is I felt really bad about my son teeth being the way they were I did not ask too many questions at the time.  Even though my dentist know my son was with his mom up to that point. I still feel guilty that he had so many bad teeth.

Answer: Do not feel bad about something you had no control over. When your dentist said your son should see a specialist he did not mean a cosmetic dentist. He would be referring to a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentist specialize in handling small children just like a pediatric doctor does.
