Baby Dental, Tips on How to Stop Thumbsucking Habits

Saturday, Apr. 23rd 2016 6:59 AM

It is understand that babies thumb suck, as it is a natural reflex for them to suck on thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or anything they can get their mouths. Thumbsucking is a soothing action for babies, and can even help them lull themselves to sleep.

However, with that said by the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt you will want to make sure your child is no longer thumb or finger sucking, because doing so can affect the lineament of their permanent teeth

Tips on how to stop thumbsucking

* Limit the time your child sucks their thumb such as only during naptime
* Praise your child for not sucking
* If your child sucks their thumb for comfort, try to correct the cause of an anxiety
* Recruit your dentist in encouraging your child to stop thumbsucking
* Remind your child of their thumbsucking habit by putting a sock over their hand when they nap or sleep
