Baby Dental – Thumb Sucking and Dental Care
At what age should I have my child stop thumb-sucking?
My son is now going on 18 months, and I am worried that his thumb-sucking may start to make his teeth come in crooked. I heard that things like pacifiers and thumb sucking are not suitable for a baby to do once their teeth come in. I have been trying to get him to stop the thumb-sucking, but it makes him upset when I do. How long should I let this continue?
Reply: Risks of dental problems are related to how often, long, and intensely your child sucks on their thumb. Some experts recommend addressing sucking habits before age three. The American Academy of Pediatrics says treatment is usually limited to children who continue thumb-sucking after turning five. You should talk to your child’s Pediatrics if you are still concerned about your son’s thumb-sucking.
