Filling for a Two Year Old – Baby Dental

Tooth filling on a Two-Year-Old

I notice that my two-year-old has a stain on his tooth. So I took him to the dentist to find out why. The dentist stated that the discoloration is a start of a cavity and needs a filling. My son will need to be strapped down for the dentist to fix my son’s cavity. Otherwise, he may move too much and cause him to hurt my son with the drill.

I am sure this will scare him for life. Now I know why so many people are afraid to go to the dentist. It is only his baby tooth. Should I let it fall out naturally and not get the filling done? Or should I go ahead and have the filling done even if it scares my son?

Reply: It is not good to put off treatment on your son’s cavity. Cavities can spread to other teeth. If left untreated, cavities can be a more significant dental care need and cause your son dental pain. Right now, it seems it scares you. That is understandable. However, if you show your fears to your son, he will pick up on that and be scared too. Ask if you can stay with your child during treatment to keep him calm and less stressed. Doing that will only work if you do not stress out.

Also, is the dentist you are taking him to a pediatric dentist? Some general dentists are not set up for children of very young age and typically will not treat children under the age of five. Pediatric dental offices usually are more kid-friendly, putting your child at ease. Also, a pediatric dentist knows how to handle very young children. A pediatric dentist usually will cost more, but you get what you pay for, and they are well worth the extra cost.
