Dental Blog, Between a silver and white filling what is the difference

Jun. 2nd 2010

My five year old son has to have two filling in his back baby teeth.  The dentist said I could either have him do silver fillings or white fillings.  He said he would advise silver since they are cheaper and the teeth in question are is baby teeth and not adult teeth were it may matter more.  What is the best to get?  He is going back to the dentist to have the filling done but not sure which way I should really go.

Dental question, Can a child get Gingivitis

May. 20th 2010

I have a nine year old son and we just got back from the dentist.  His dentist told me that my sons teeth are very strong and at this time he has no cavities.  (he never had any cavities)  However,  the dentist is also telling me that my son brushing habits are not good and he does not think my son is flossing.  Due to that the dentist said he is showing signs of gingivitis.   I though only adult get gingivitis.

I am a little upset over this since I make sure my son brushes and although he does not always floss like he should I can not understand why he should be getting gingivitis.  Now the dentist is saying he needs to have a deep cleaning.  Afterwords he should then come in three to four times for just a normal cleaning until he brushes better and the gingivitis is under control.   I have good dental insurance so it not about money but I just wondering if this sounds right to other people.

I do trust my dentist it just seems like a lot of dental work for a child that does not have all his adult teeth in yet.   Anyone else have this issue with their kids that they can advise me about?

Dental question, How are different teeth refer to by a dentist.

Teeth questions what is # 19

So my nine year old son had to have his teeth inspected by the school dentist.  This is something his school does.  My son brought back the report done by the school dentist which states he has a cavity in tooth 19 that needs a filling.

I do not know what tooth number 19 is.  So if anyone could tell me that would be helpful.  I looked at his teeth and did not see anything wrong of hand.  Since they do not do X-rays, I would think if a school dentist could see a cavity so could I.
Let me state I do not completely trust some school dentist.   My son takes really good care of his teeth I make sure he brushes twice a day and flosses after dinner too.  He has never had a cavity.
