Question: I am looking for an affordable dental option in California. What are the differences between dental insurance and dental plans, and which one is best suited for my needs? Also, how can I find the most cost-effective dental plan or insurance in the state?
Answer: That depends on what types of dental services you need. Dental HMO insurance is the lower-cost option but does not cover all types of dental care. In comparison, a dental discount is a low-cost dental alternative to dental insurance. Dental discount plans provide discounted savings for all dental services you have at participating plan providers. Each plan type will help you save money on your dental care needs. In California, we have dental discount plan options and HMO insurance options. You can call our member service line at 310-534-3444. Our team of experts can explain each plan’s various options and benefits and help you select the one that best fits your needs and budget.

Question: I live in California. I do not care what dentist I go to, but the dental insurance plans that are network plans do not have a dentist within 50 miles of me.
Answer: There are some areas in California that, for some plans, do not have local providers. Usually, those areas would be more rural and have fewer dental offices. If this is your case and you wish to stay within 50+ miles, review Dental PPO’s insurance plan options, as they will still benefit outside-network dentists.
In addition to the above, Dental Indemnity insurance plans may also be a good option for you. These plans allow you to see any dentist you choose without being limited to a network.
However, remember that you may have higher out-of-pocket costs with an indemnity plan. It’s important to carefully review the plan details and costs before deciding. Be sure to compare each option’s costs and benefits to determine which is the best fit for your needs and budget.

Question: I am 28, and although I have dental insurance through work, I still don’t like going to the dentist. I have yet to go in for my free twice-a-year cleaning because even that makes me nervous. Can you suggest some ways to overcome dental anxiety?
Answer: One good way to avoid having more extensive dental care needs is by seeing your dentist regularly. Avoiding the dentist is never a good idea. By seeing your dentist for your checkups and cleaning, the dentist can spot any minor dental issues and treat them before they become more prominent, more costly dental care needs. I understand having dental fear issues, but talk to your dentist and go over your fears. The more you address your concerns and fears, the better you will be able to handle them. Do not let your fear stop you from maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Here are some additional tips to help overcome dental anxiety:
1. Communicate with your dentist: Tell your dentist about your dental anxiety. They can walk you through the process and help you feel more comfortable.
2. Bring a distraction: Bring a book, magazine, or music to distract yourself while in the waiting room or during your appointment.
3. Practice relaxation techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or visualization to help calm your nerves.
4. Choose your dental appointment time wisely: Schedule your appointment when you are less likely to feel stressed, such as early in the morning.
5. Bring a friend: Bring a friend or family member to your appointment who can provide support and reassurance.
Remember, your dental health is important; regular checkups are necessary to maintain it. Taking steps to overcome dental anxiety can help you receive the dental care you need for a healthy smile.

Question: I am reviewing the different dental insurance plan options you have, and with regards to the California dental network plans, the 460, 411, and 595, how do they differ?
Answer: They are all HMO plans, so they work similarly. However, the more you pay for the plan, the less you settle for the higher-cost dental care services. Therefore, if all you have is the twice-a-year check-up and cleaning, you may not need to get the more expensive California dental plan 595. If you have more extensive services, you may want to avoid buying the least costly plan since spending a little more will save you money on your more extensive dental care needs.

Did you know that the position of your teeth and your smile play an important role in aging your face? As we age, we show less of our upper teeth when we smile. Tooth wear alters the youthful proportions of our teeth; teeth become yellow, and the soft tissues of the face begin to sag as they become less supported. An esthetic orthodontist can enhance the facial appearance and reverse signs of aging through orthodontic treatment alone or coordination with other dental and medical professionals.

In a prior post, we discussed the fluoride content and effectiveness of your toothpaste. To get the most from your toothpaste, consider buying toothpastes that exclude ingredients that reduce fluoride bioavailability, like SLS. Also, buy your toothpaste in smaller containers and at more frequent intervals so that your toothpaste stays fresh. This simple trick will help your teeth remain strong and is especially important for individuals at high risk for cavities.
When buying toothpaste, it’s important to consider additional factors beyond the fluoride content. For example, if you have sensitive teeth, look for toothpaste specifically designed to address this issue. Additionally, if you have certain dietary restrictions or allergies, carefully check the ingredients list to ensure that the toothpaste is safe for you to use. Finally, consider the texture and flavor of the toothpaste, as this can impact your overall experience and encourage you to stick to a consistent brushing routine. Ultimately, the best toothpaste for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences, so take some time to explore your options and find the one that works best for you.

The longer your toothpaste sits on the shelf after it is manufactured, the more time there is for fluoride to combine with ingredients in your toothpaste like abrasives, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), etc., which reduce the overall fluoride content and effectiveness of your toothpaste. Studies have shown that this reduction in fluoride availability can occur rapidly over the first few months after toothpaste is manufactured. This happens even before your toothpaste reaches its expiration date.

Question: I will receive dental benefits through my current employer in another six months. Right now, I need a short-term or temporary dental plan to help me with a few of my current dental needs. I have been putting off buying dental insurance since I will get dental benefits soon. However, one of my teeth is really starting to hurt me. Do you have any dental plans I do not have to keep for a year or more?
Answer: I suggest reviewing dental discount plans as they will help reduce your overall dental care cost, and you can typically cancel the plan at any time with a 30-day written request. You can also review the Dental HMO plan option. Although some will have you pay for the plan annually, HMOs are inexpensive and may work better for you.
You can call our member service line at 310-534-3444. Our team of experts can explain each plan’s various options and benefits and help you select the one that best fits your needs and budget.

A study by University of Manchester researchers finds a toothbrush can contain over 10 million bacteria, including E. coli and Staph. The water can contaminate a toothbrush splashed when we wash our hands, or worse, by bacteria from an open-flushed toilet. Nasties that fall from toilet spray remain airborne long enough to settle on surfaces throughout the bathroom. And if you drop your toothbrush on the floor, the five-second rule does not apply. Think about keeping your toothbrush out of your bathroom. Also, you should soak your toothbrush in germ-killing mouthwash once a week.
